On June 8, to mark World Ocean Day, our staff in the Bordeaux office will have the honor of taking part in an event organized by members of the Bordeaux Blue Collective and Surfrider Foundation Europe.
World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on June 8, 2008, to raise public awareness of the importance of sustainable management of the oceans and their resources. The initiative was created following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and are our source of life, producing at least 50% of the planet's oxygen and home to most of the Earth's biodiversity. They are also essential to our economy: by 2030, 40 million people will be employed in ocean industries.
However, with 90% of large fish populations already depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. It is therefore crucial to protect the ocean and our entire ecosystem by striking a new balance.
The surfrider foundation Europe
Founded in 1990 by an emblematic group of surfers, including three-time world surfing champion Tom Curren, Surfrider Foundation Europe is a pioneering non-profit organization in the fight to protect the oceans and their users. It mobilizes local communities and promotes sustainable practices to protect our oceans and preserve their biodiversity.
The association has 46 volunteer branches in 11 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland).
It has 5 territorial project implementation offices (Marseille, Bordeaux, San Sebastian, Barcelona and Hamburg) and 2 political advocacy steering offices in Paris and Brussels.
The event in Lacanau
In collaboration with the Blue Collective in Bordeaux, which brings together over 100 personalities, entrepreneurs, managers and investors, Surfrider Foundation Europe is organizing a day dedicated to protecting the oceans in Lacanau.
During the day, concrete actions will be put in place, including speeches to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting the oceans.
